Testimony heats up over Walla Walla County pot ban

A public hearing preceding Monday’s vote on medical marijuana by Walla Walla County commissioners drew mostly pleas to allow production, processing and sale of drug.
Only one speaker out of eight, Jacque Richerzhagen, favored banning marijuana. She said that in her experience as an educator and social worker, “most educators I have talked to are against this ... We are concerned about our kids. The message they get is that this is acceptable no matter what is coming across ... I am not in favor of this, I am in favor of you voting this down.”
But the remaining seven speakers defended the drug and were often sharply critical of the county’s actions.
Alden Foote told commissioners he believed the county has pushed through its ban on marijuana simply for expediency. “I believe we should conduct a true workshop with a round table discussion of facts to include those potential cooperative members and local affected farmers of the facts and not being led down a biased, banned trail by your consultant, Mr. Stalzer,” he said.
Pot grower Mark Hoffer urged commissioners to consider how their decisions will affect patients needing the drug, especially those unable to grow their own plants.
“I really encourage this board to use the wisdom of Solomon. (Do) something that maybe you would not choose to do, but if one person benefits from it, would you want to take that benefit away from that person?” he said.
Another grower, Creston Rogerson, who is party to a pending lawsuit in Columbia County challenging the county’s marijuana ban, said he has spent “tens of thousands of dollars in litigation” and “we’re going to have some more ....”
Rogerson accused the commissioners of having prejudged the issue before the hearing, then started to leave the hearing room.
Commissioner Perry Dozier halted him.
“I just want to tell you, you’re not giving us at all the benefit of the doubt that we are sitting here listening to testimony,” Dozier said. “... I came in here with a very open mind on medical marijuana but it really difficult to sit here when you get attacked by somebody who is accusing you of already having a decision fully made and then get up before testimony is over with and walk out without hearing our comments.”
But Rogerson replied, “This county hasn’t the guts to come up and talk to me. ... We’ve tried to sit down and talk to you people. So don’t act to me with your outrageousness here, my friend. Because, I’ll tell you what, you attacked our family first, 351 days after I was in business! What took you so long? Because your planning committee blew up. The city wanted it and you guys didn’t. Don’t you preach to me, man. You attacked us first!”
Rogerson then left without further comment.
