Earth is full of magic!
Animate elements dancing for joy!
Unfortunately it is also full of magical barriers.
The blind and the evil can't even see the path.
Thinking myself a traveler,
I danced around your glade,
Eyes blind to your light.
I couldn't even smell you!
For miles I wandered,
In the wrong direction,
Hopeful of finding nothing
Except pain strong enough to kill the past.
You left traces of love everywhere,
Like nectar that sweetens the mystery of flowers.
I saw these things and nature knew I was not good enough for you.
I enjoyed the gift of your distant love.
As Frank Herbert once said,
"When God ordains a creature to die
In a certain place, he causes the will
Of that creature to direct him to the place".
You saw through God's trap,
You clever and sly desert devil.
You disobeyed fate and gifted me with hope.
Chasing the outcast to ground, my savior.
I wanted to close my blind eyes,
To take a rest from my dark ignorance
In God's garden.
You chased me like the hounds of hell;
You refused to let me near the gate.
How is it that I can love you,
While resisting and denying everything you are?
How can such a bright moon exist,
In such a dark hell?
Who and what are you,
That in spite of the heat,
You are cool and uncorrupt as diamonds?
You are perfection such as I can never appreciate.
I will never be allowed close enough to you
To return the favor.
I will despair as you age;
Your toil will be mine, and your burden will lie on my shoulders.
You never even shook my hand.
Like a ghost, like a god,
I prayed to you and you answered,
But I never held your hand.
For the rest of my life
I will wonder what it would have been like,
To be yours.

The Hidden Valley
Brotherhood falls asunder at the touch of fire!
He finds his fellow guilty of a skin
Not coloured like his own, and having power
To enforce the wrong, for such a worthy cause
Dooms and devotes him as his lawful prey.
~William Cowper
