Moral Depression vs. Economic Depression

Dear ones,
As you may recall, part of our current president's campaign platform leaned pretty heavily on the idea that America is somehow caught up in some type of economic depression.
I'm no economist, and I'm no psychiatrist, but in spite of my limited scope of understanding, I must ask as a citizen, is this nation not morally depressed as a result of the 9/11 scandal?
Are we really going to just chalk up the misery of the last 16 years to Not Working Hard Enough?
Those of you who read the book Animal Farm will recall the hardworking draft horse, who believes so strongly in maintaining the faith of his comrades, he literally works himself to death for the failing system -- don't the pigs in charge actually sell him to a slaughterhouse? I don't remember! I just remember how sure he was, how much he needed to believe that his life was serving some higher purpose.
In my opinion a lot of the bums of America, the ones the so called conservative sector are so frustrated by, are simply refusing to participate because they know where the taxes go.
I believe that if we acknowledged openly our mistakes after 9/11 and tried to make some sort of apology and reparations, people would be less depressed in America, and we could get back on our feet again.
If we just let it fester (because 9/11 is too big to die naturally), people will continue to be sickened by the smell, if that makes sense.
If President Trump wants us to Make $$$, we need to first make it better. We can't just turn our backs on what happened here, and we certainly shouldn't be capitalizing on a lie when truth sells.
